Information on certification is divided by country to reflect the different regulations prevailing in the UK and the different categories of certification. The category under which a biogas plant applies to join the Biofertiliser Certification Scheme depends on whether the operator is interested in certification for quality assurance and 'end of waste' status OR quality assurance only.
The three categories of certification are 'End of Waste', 'End of Waste Scotland', and 'Quality Assurance'.
End of Waste
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the certification criteria are the PAS110:2014, the Quality Protocol (ADQP) and the BCS Scheme Rules. Operators applying to the scheme for quality assurance and 'end of waste' status in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland are applying under the End of Waste (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) category of certification.
End of Waste Scotland
For biogas plants in Scotland the certification criteria are the PAS110:2014, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency's position statement and the BCS Scheme Rules. Operators applying to the scheme for quality assurance and 'end-of-waste' status in Scotland are applying under the End of Waste Scotland category of certification.
Quality Assurance
Biogas plants in the UK that do not require or do not wish to attain 'end-of-waste' status for digestate can apply to the scheme for certification to PAS 110:2014 and the BCS Scheme Rules under the Quality Assurance category of certification.
